There are many reasons an audio makes a great lead magnet – busy people may not have time to sit and read the lead magnet they download. And we really want them to use, read, and take action on your free thing.

Making an audio is a great way to give your peeps some valuable information and solve a pain-point problem they might be having in a quick and easy way. They can listen on the go and download your accompanying workbook to read at a more convenient time.

My very first lead magnet was a 3 part audio series! When I was first starting out, I built my very first email list and got my first 300 subscribers using this audio training. Then I tweaked the content and repurposed it again for other trainings.

It took me FOREVER to actually figure out HOW to do this. I struggled for days (possibly weeks) to get everything perfect. I didn’t know what software to use or how to set it all up. I was stuck and confused! Not a great combo. So, I thought it might be helpful to explain all the steps, so you can do it for yourself!

My favourite way to actually execute this – for you, as the business owner –  is to RECORD your training FIRST, then transcribe your audio into the downloadable PDF.

Pro Tip: If you already have a handle on the recording bit and want to get fancy, you could create slides in Keynote or Powerpoint and record your screen with Screen Flow while you are talking. Then upload the entire thing to your Google drive, Vimeo, or Dropbox. Then embed the entire presentation into a leadpage to collect email addresses. If this is waaay too confusing for you at the moment – no sweat, just follow the steps to make a basic recording for now 🙂

An audio is sufficient if you are just starting out. No need to overwhelm yourself in the beginning with too many steps.

First, I’ll explain the tech details and how you will actually record your training, then I’ll tell you exactly what to say in your recording. I’ll even provide a script for you to follow 🙂

So let’s go over how you’ll actually record this thing.

1. Make sure you have a good mic to record your voice. I use my Shure mic (here), you could use a Yeti mic (here).
You really don’t want to depend on your computer’s internal mic – sometimes you’ll get some interference and the sound can be echoey. You don’t want to record your entire presentation only to discover it sounds terrible.

2. Test out the recording before you begin! KEY step. Once before, I talked for 45 minutes before I figured out I didn’t have the         recording button on. Yup, not cool.

3. Use recording software. (Use screen flow if you have slides. There is a free trial in the link I provided), use audacity, Garage Band on your Mac, audio acrobat, or sony sound forge audio studio to record your voice.

4. Turn off your phone! Haha, I learned this the hard way. I once accidentally answered a call on my iPhone (instead of dismissing the call) then the person on the line listed to me talk for 15 minutes about webinars before hanging up. Yup, embarrassing.

5. Keep in mind, you may have to edit your audio and that’s ok!… Interruptions happen. A couple times my doorbell rang while I was recording and the UPS delivery person needed me to sign for a package. Those are the joys of working in a home office.

6. Either stand up or sit up straight when you are recording. Try to talk as though you are talking on the phone to someone or as if you are explaining something to a friend. The point is to keep it real and not to sound rehearsed. Personally, I pretend I’m teaching the topic to a workshop or class while I’m talking. It helps you to remember to breathe and not talk so fast.

7. Save your audio as a MP3 file on your desktop – so you can find it! My desktop is messy, and I lose things… haha

8. Upload the MP3 file to your website, or Soundcloud, or attach it to the email your subscriber receives AFTER they opt-in to get your lead magnet.

9. Now you’ll want to have your recording transcribed. Send your MP3 to a transcribing service such as Rev.com. It’s quick and easy.

10. You’ll have to read through your transcribed document and edit itonce you get the transcribed document.  Make sure it makes complete sense for a blog post or Lead magnet. You might need to format it using a tool like Canva or Picmonkey to get your document to look like a nice workbook. You’ll want to add headings, pictures, and bold text etc. Make it attractive and fun to read.

Optional: Use a graphic designer from Fiver to create a cover for you. Or create one yourself in Canva or Photoshop.

Pro Tip: You could use this EXACT same process to create audio recordings of your blog posts. Give your readers alternate ways to learn your content. First, create the content – then record yourself reading it.

Now that you’ve got the recording part down-pat, let’s get into what you’ll actually be saying.

I’m going to tell you exactly what to include in your audio training and I’ll break this down for you in 6 easy to follow steps.

Step 1. Create your introduction.

Explain who you are and what they can expect to hear from you. Tell them what you’ll be teaching them and why they will want to stay and listen.

Personally, I love using this template when explaining what you do:

I work with [INSERT YOUR IDEAL CUSTOMER] who are struggling with [INSERT WHAT THEIR BIGGEST PAIN POINT IS] and instead want to [WHAT THEY REALLY WANT – THE TRANSFORMATION].

For example, I would say, “I work with creative aspiring entrepreneurs who are struggling with setting up an online business using their talents, experience, and unique ideas. Instead they want to learn how to actually get paid to do what they love so they can have more freedom in their life.”

Be specific so people can determine if you can help them.

You can ask them to turn off all distractions, get out a pen and paper and prepare to learn some valuable information.

Let them know they are in the right spot if they want to know…abc

2. Establish why they should listen to you. How are you an expert or a credible source of information? People might be skeptical or wonder if you have yourself experienced success from what you are teaching. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a monetary win. You could talk about your own transformation of getting from point a- point b.

If this was my training, I would insert a real story form my own life. I might share how I once had a really successful business designing jewelry in the wedding industry. I shipped my designs (that I also created) all around the world. And I was asked to offer my jewelry at the Oscars/Academy Awards celebrity gift lounge. That would have been amazing opportunity for my brand, but I realized I would need to scale my business in a much bigger way (a.k.a. more hours, more work, and hire lots of people) and I didn’t want to. I was tired, and working too many hours already. In that moment, I discovered I had built the wrong kind of business model – for me.

So now I teach other entrepreneurs about business so they don’t make the same mistakes I made. I help them build a business that supports the kind of lifestyle they want to have!

Rather than one that just creates a job for themselves.

3. Tell your story. This sort’a blends in with the last point. You really just want to continue telling them a personal story (or even a story of someone you helped… or someone you know, if you don’t have a client yet).

The main point here is you need to tell a story so people will be able to relate to you in a more personal way. The idea here is to help people resonate with you – or not. You want your ideal customers to stick around and get to know you more.

And if they don’t resonate with you, that’s ok too. You don’t want to please everyone. If you are, then your message is too  generic – and probably not at all compelling.

Your story could outline your own transformation in this way:

  • You worked very hard doing x,y,z.
  • You encountered struggle, failure, of hard lessons
  • You created change for yourself or created a system
  • Your life is much better since going from point a to point b

Stories work really well if you can explain the benefits you experienced once you made your transformation.

For example, in my case, my husband is a military officer and I have 4 kids. So, Freedom in my daily lifestyle is very important to me. I figured out I needed to create a business that would support this lifestyle.

I worked in corporate marketing for many years, and that definitely didn’t afford me any freedom at all! And it wasn’t the kind of work I wanted to do! And my jewelry line left me tired and unfulfilled. So that is why I’m so passionate about helping people figure out how to set up their own businesses so they can have time freedom AND make an impact doing things they love to do.

You can see that this is where you tell your audience an emotional based story – you share your WHY and your desire to  help/serve.

At this point, you don’t need to introduce the thing you are selling …yet.

But you do NEED to tell them how their life could be better when they experience the transformation you provide.

For example, one of my favourite things to say, is that I love having my morning coffee on my front porch while I watch my neighbours drive to work. I know that is something my potential clients want to do as well! They want the feeling of have their own time freedom. They also want to be able to create their own schedules.

4. Now you lay out your solution or transformation.

This is where you give value by teaching people some of your best stuff. You can help them solve one or two of their problems without overwhelming them with information.

You tell them, “I’m going to give you a quick overview and then I’ll break things down for you step-by-step.”

Describe your step-by-step process in order (it’s a great idea to have your own signature process or system).

Doing that will help you be seen as an expert in your niche. 

 

5. Give a strong call to action.

Go over everything you just taught them and show how you answered their pain point or problem.

Then describe the exact steps you want them to take next. This could be, visit your sales page, read your report, go to your website, join your Facebook group, share this on social media.

People will want to know, “That sounds great, but will this work for me?” or “How do I get help implementing what you just told me?”

So give them a place to go to get their answers. You could introduce your one-on-one services, your class, course, info-product…. whatever you have created.

 

6. Download the script I’m including here so you can insert your own information.

You’ll want to read your script over to make sure you’ve included all your key points, keeping in mind this shouldn’t be a polished document that you read word for word … or it will sound like you’re reading instead of speaking.

Bullet points work great, so you can insert some things on the fly as you think of them.

7. Record!

Use the recording instructions I’ve included above to get going.

Now you’ve got an amazing training audio that you can use to begin collecting email addresses and to help give people an idea what it will be like to work with you.

You could set up a leadpage and inexpensive Facebook ads and begin list building!

I wanted to discuss something I’ve been hearing lately from my own clients, as well as something I see going on in a number of business groups I’m a part of.

If your message/services/program/offerings are feeling unclear, this is for you!

Let me ask you this: Are you feeling at all like you are tired of your own business or feeling like you need to stop and regroup? You are confusing even yourself?

This shows up in your everyday business a few ways:

1. You can’t think of what kind of content you should be publishing for your audience.

2. You are procrastinating like never before.

3. You can’t seem to get motivated to start new projects or finish what you have on the go.

4. You are doing other non-money-making tasks (like tweaking your website again) instead of more important tasks like connecting with potential clients and making offers.

Have an Authentic business.

You can be your authentic self! Don’t be a second rate version of someone else

Another more obvious problem: You are just beginning to sound and look like everybody else in your space.

Lately, I’ve been noticing so many people sounding exactly like the next person with no differentiating factor in what they are selling or offering.

And I know you’ve seen this too!

And as a result, their services aren’t compelling. And they blend in with the crowd.

That is exactly what you don’t want to happen to you.

As a business owner this can feel like your own message is muddied or unclear to you. Your direction isn’t easy to pinpoint and you lose sight of what you once were feeling really passionate about – your own business.

I think this really stems from constantly consuming and consuming and consuming other people’s information, courses, teachings without ever implementing. We turn off our own intuition and our own feelings about it all.

It just becomes so exhausting!

What if I told you you can just trust your own intuition and what you already know, then go ahead and unfollow, unsubscribe, and disconnect from all the noise and from all of the teachings that are flooding your inbox. Wouldn’t that be a relief?

I think it all boils down to a fear of missing out (FOMO) on the next bright shiny object as well as an insecurity in what we already know and have to offer.

You can change it all just by realized that you have what it takes, you just need to trust yourself.

Here’s what I suggest:

Since you are the boss of your own business, you have complete permission to give yourself a re-do and just get back to basics! Take a self-imposed time out and get back to the reasons you started your business in the first place and get in touch with all the things you had hoped to accomplish. You can do that! You’re in charge.

There is no right way or wrong way to do your business. There is no feeling “behind” or like you are failing. You get to set the pace and you get to decide what services you want to offer and how you want to sell your offerings. You don’t have to do it in the same way you see everybody else doing it.

And you don’t have to use the same language, have the same pictures, or copy their brand just to be successful.

The truth is that people will purchase from you if they feel connected to you on an emotional level and relate to how you teach the things you know. They often see themselves in your journey and your message resonates with them.

So please don’t dismiss the importance of your own experiences, journey, and story and what you bring to the table.
If you can get back to doing business in a way that is 100% authentically you, then everything else will fall into place and your direction will be much clearer to you.

How will this look in your business?

1. Your content will be easier to create. You will be able to use your own stories as the basis for the things you teach. You can teach things in your own way instead of worrying about how everybody else is doing it. Nobody knows your story like you do!

2. You get to run your own business the way you want to run it. No more following a set path or feeling like you have to be on every social media platform out there. Think about what YOU want to sell and how you want to deliver it. Don’t like selling 1 on 1 sessions? Then don’t do it. Don’t like twitter? Then don’t tweet.

The amazing thing about being an entrepreneur is that every decision is solely yours to make.

Just show up as vulnerable, thoughtful, and original and your message and services will be compelling to your audience.

Not everybody is going to like you or resonate with what you have to say and that is 100% OK!

So go ahead and create what feels right to you and put your work and services out into the world in your own way!

How to use Facebook Groups to Grow Your Audience

As a business owner, are you leaving money on the table by not using Facebook groups to grow your audience?

The other day, I sent out a newsletter to my subscribers on Instagram training and today I thought I’d keep with the theme of social media and talk about the importance of Facebook Groups when you are starting (or growing) your business. Why you should start one and use it to engage with your growing community.

I’m going to assume most of you already have a Facebook fan page (or business page – they are the same thing). And you might have already realized the limitations here… For example, you might have found that it can be difficult to grow a community of fans on your business page or get much interaction on your posts – that’s if anyone actually sees your posts.

 

 

Facebook doesn’t show your new posts to all the people who have liked your page; unfortunately it doesn’t work like that (which kind’a sucks because you think if your page had 200 fans, then they’ll all see what you send out). It’s difficult to update your fans if they never see your posts in their newsfeed!

You might be able to gain some traction if a few people “like” your new post, then Facebook knows that your content is of interest to people so it will serve it to more people.

Plus Facebook is intuitive and knows what people want to see. They want all their users to have a great experience while they are browsing their feed, so it will show posts it thinks you are interested in.

Some people will go the route of paying for Facebook page likes to get the ball rolling – and I definitely don’t think there is a problem with that. You can budget about 50 cents -1 dollar for each like. If you are paying more than that, you might want to re-think your targeting, photo and/or copy.

Another option to growing a more interactive fan base might be to start a closed Facebook group of your own. And this is what I’m going to talk about today!

 

So, why would you want to do this anyway?

 1. If you can get people to join your group, you convert them into warm leads. Not only can you offer high value on an individual basis, but you can actually sell your products and services to people who already like you. They are already fans.

2. Target audience: If you use Facebook ads, or want to in the future, you can specifically target your own audience. And the cost per conversion is much lower than seeking out a cold audience.

3. The best way to create raving fans is to deliver the best content, service, and education. We already know this! And what better way to do this than in a Facebook group where you can answer questions and spend time in there daily helping out your potential clients. The entire reason you have your business is to be helping people solve a particular problem or pain point – so this is an amazing opportunity to wow your followers and actually help them.

4. Remember – any opportunity to shine and overdeliver is good for business. You want your peeps to think: If your FREE content is amazeballs, then imagine what you offer to your paid clients!

5. The people in your group will tell you what they need! This is so important when you are constantly creating new products and services, or if you are just starting out. You can ask lots of questions, poll your group and actually create products based on what they need. Then when you release them, you can actually say, “I know you indicated that this was a particular problem and I can solve it by…”

6. You can create great word of mouth referrals from your new fans. If you are indeed doing a great job providing service and your fans are happy, they will spread the word about your awesomeness!

 

So, now that you know how this can benefit you, what next?

 

  • First, I would suggest having a low barrier to having them join your group. You don’t want to make it too difficult for people to get into your group. I would place a direct link to join in your welcome emails, thank you pages, your side bar on your blog, in any posts you write, in all your social media bios etc. Sprinkle the love around!
  • Set Guidelines: When you set up your group, make sure you put lots of information in the about section so people know the rules of the group. For example, if you want your group to be strictly non-promotional, say so. Make it a safe environment where your peeps don’t have to worry about being pitched to all day long by other group members. We’ve all seen this!

The idea is to create an environment where group members genuinely help each other out.  There is nothing worse that seeing your group members say “I’ll PM you with details of my x,y,z, …” Seriously though?! If you want to be a member of a group and you want to be of service, just give people your advice already! Don’t tell everyone to private message you so they can be pitched. I’ll get off my soapbox now! But seriously, this is a little pet-peeve of mine!  Besides, if you know the answer to someone’s question, give value and help everyone out. 

  • Be Consistent: Another great idea is to set up a schedule for yourself so you can stay on track.  For example, every Monday you       post something motivational (quote or inspirational video), Tuesdays are for sharing, Wednesdays are to celebrate your wins, Thursdays for Q&A, Fridays might be for accountability, and Saturdays for gratitudes. Just be consistent and make it fun for your group to participate. It’s your group, so make up fun topics that are relevant to your fans!
  • Engage: The whole idea here is to build relationships. It’s very much about constantly giving and providing value for your biz friends. Find superstars within your group and get them to be your ambassadors. They can be there to answer questions when you can’t be there.
  • Show them you care and give lots of value. Actually ask your members what they need and just give it to them. Easy. It’s always  best to under-promise and over-deliver!
  • Remember to SAHRE. Share your group everywhere! If you are on Instagram and Twitter, create your own hashtag and encourage others to use it too. For example, I like to use #passionplanners for my facebook group.

I love Instagram.

For so many reasons… but I didn’t start out thinking I could leverage Instagram to grow my business. And it’s not a social media platform I have been using for very long.

I was able to grow my audience from zero to 6000 in less than 6 months.

And I totally understand your frustration with it, if you aren’t using it currently.

I mean, what is with all the hashtags? Do you use 30 of them, or what?

Should you use those little emojis, or not?

And what about trying to take gorgeous + appealing l photos that are interesting and also are related to what you do in your business!

Seriously, this can cause most people to just forget about it and move on to another platform. I get it.

But, what if I told you that Instagram isn’t just for teenagers and you can actually find your clients there and convert followers into actual paying clients? Wouldn’t that be cool?

Grow your audience on Instagram.

Having a larger following can lead to more sales for your business and strengthen your brand too!

So let’s get started and I’ll give you some tips on how to leverage Instagram for your business and tell you why you should be including an Instagram strategy in your business building process.

First, I’m going to give you a few reasons why you should jump on the bandwagon:

1 Instagram has already surpassed twitter with over 300 million users! Being able to reach this audience of prospective customers can mean more sales for your business.

2 Instagram is FREE. And easy to use.

3 You can get started quickly and it doesn’t have to be a time suck (like facebook can be sometimes). 

4 Your ideal clients are probably hanging out there – even if you aren’t.

Here are some tips to get you started:

1 Kow your target audience before you post anything. If you are reaching out to your potential clients and hoping to drive traffic to your services, you should keep this in mind before you being to develop your strategy.

Instagram is very visual (of course), so your content shouldn’t just be random and meant for just anyone. You should be thinking about what kind of content will appeal to your ideal clients.

Create a theme. If you aren’t sure where to even start, you could try looking through your favorite instagram accounts also targeting your niche and take note of what appeals to you.

For example, if you are a health coach, you could post pictures of you working with your clients, photos of you at the gym (if that’s your thing), healthy recipes, morning smoothie pictures, healthy lifestyle quotes etc. Let people get to know you behind the scenes of your business and what it would be like to work with you.

2 Instagram is all about content! Keep your brand in mind when posting things for your online community.

Try to keep things consistent while inspiring them, educating them, and providing valuable content they can use in some way.

Try to keep your brand colors consistent as well as the look and feel of your other social media accounts.

3 You should use hashtags!! If you don’t know how to use hashtags, I would suggest thinking of them like categories where your ideal clients can find you.

For example, if you use #solopreneur, you’ll come up in the search if another entrepreneur is searching for posts using that hashtag. You can use hashtags to directly target people in your niche. You can even use trending hashtags by clicking on the TAGS tab in the app and search a hashtag you like to use – it will give you a list of other related hashtags that are currently trending!

You can search anything… #travel, #mompreneur, #jewelry. Whatever your niche is, you can search it here.

How many hashtags should you use? 

4 Find influential people in your industry to connect with. By searching through hashtags, you can find other cool people to follow. Be genuine and comment on their posts. If you find an account you like, go through and “like” 5-10 photos.  Leave a genuine comment and “follow” them.  This works best if these people are also in your niche.

Leave the door open for communication and possible conversations outside of Instagram after you have have connected.

5 When someone comments on any of your posts, you should always reply back and thank them for leaving a comment. It’s just polite and it shows people you are active on the platform and you like to connect and keep your profile up-to-date.

6 Use your bio to drive traffic to your offer or your website! This is SO IMPORTANT and really might be the only reason you should be growing your Instagram profile in the first place. You can convert followers into paying customers by telling them what to do when they see and like your posts.

Let them know to “click the link” in your bio to get your free offer or to visit your website for a sale or promotion, for example.  Make sure your bio has a clear link to your latest opt-in or freebie and make sure your website is optimized for conversions by having a clear place for potential clients to enter their email address.

TIP: If you want to shorten your link, you can use bitly to create your own shortened url links. You want these new followers to be on your email list so you can contact them later!

7. Link your Instagram account to all your other social media profiles. Inviting people to also follow you on Instagram will create more opportunity for people to conect with you on their preferred platform!

Take a leap of faith

You can choose to keep struggling to make sense of it all by yourself or you can take a leap of faith. Lots of people give up just before they are about to succeed — just when they are on the edge or the precipice of finally seeing the results they have been working so hard for – I sooo don’t want that to happen to you!

Are you feeling sick and tired of being stuck in the comparison cycle? Are you avoiding Facebook altogether because you are tired of seeing people (people who are just like you) who have exactly what you want but can’t seem to achieve for yourself? Maybe they are the same age as you — or worse, they are younger! ugh … like 23 with their shit together. – and they are seemingly making things happen for them but you feel like you haven’t yet cracked the code. Like there is a secret you just aren’t getting. It’s so frustrating.

Instead of letting this completely ruin your day — or worse, making you feeling like you should just give up — discover how focusing on what you really want, combined with the right action plan can create the reality you want.

Unfortunately, your dreams and desires are not going to magically happen by laying in bed watching re-runs of your favourite movie. I know this to be true! Instead of watching Under the Tuscan Sun for the 100th time while dreaming of running away to Italy, get out of bed, create a plan, and truly believe the life you want is 100% possible for you.

The truth is, regular people travel to Italy every day and there is no reason you can’t too — if that’s what you want. Overcrowded flights leave everyday #destinationItaly

I know that it is so much easier to make up excuses, like “they are smarter, more educated, prettier, or have more time than you do to work on their business,” when in reality, we are all essentially on the same playing field — there are people out there just like you doing the exact things you only dream about.

So, if creating change is what you really want, there is a planning process you can do to get yourself there in a systematic way — instead of relying on hope alone.

The process begins with naming the top 5 things you desire and the action steps needed to make it happen. Sounds simple enough, right?!  Get out your notebook and write it down!

This isn’t the time for thinking small or underestimating what you are capable of. Take all doubt out of the equation and just for a moment think if all the fears didn’t exist or money wasn’t an object, or your current situation wasn’t an issue —

What kind of life would you create for yourself?

What would you desire to have in your life and business?

The desire must resonate with you and be what you actually want more than anything else, or the process won’t work. Your desires become your WHY – or your reason for getting out of bed in the morning. Your WHY has to be big enough to sustain you through the tough times along your journey — which are guaranteed to happen. Failure is non-negotiable and necessary. (I write more about that here)

If your top desires are clear in your mind and you are reminded of them daily, they can act as a motivational factor to keep going, rather than falling off the wagon midway down the path.

So think deeply and feel into what exactly you want in your life and business — be as specific as you possibly can. Generic wants that are not motivated from an authentic place are the things that will keep you on track in your action plan.

Think of the What, (what is it exactly?) The why (why do I want it anyway), and the when (when is my deadline? When will I have this? When will it happen?)

Next, you’ll have to put a plan in place with some action steps to make it happen. And we already discussed how you create an action plan in the last newsletter – you can find that here if you missed it!

Having said all of this – I know that it sounds easy or is easier said than done. And why is that, you might be asking?  Its because we all come to the party with our own unique set of mindset beliefs that we don’t even realize we are carrying around. We hear and model the lessons we have learned from our own families or the people we spent the most time with.

The thoughts we have can be extremely toxic to our ability to make money or they may be in opposition of all the things you might be learning in business programs or from your own coach or mentor. And the truth is, it becomes impossible to implement the work if you have mindsets that are keeping you stuck.

So, you might be thinking, How do I even know if I have a problematic mindset or carry around limiting beliefs? It is normal to not even be aware of your own internal programming, its so much easier to detect in someone else.

But if you are saying any of these things, you might need to take notice:

• If you say to yourself, Making money is hard
• If you have trouble getting clients or think asking people for money is hard
• If you feel salesey
• If you are not generating income in your business
• If you are doing busy work which tricks you into feeling productive
• you don’t feel qualified enough – educated enough, pretty enough – to do the work
• you feel like everything must be perfect
• people have said to you that you have an expensive hobby
• you never feel like you are getting ahead
• you are overwhelmed
• you think money is for other people
• you think you need to work harder to get ahead
These are just a FEW of ways we keep ourselves small in our business.

If any of this resonates with you, don’t worry you are not alone. All of these scripts are so common. But the first step in changing this is just recognizing them as they come up.

In my business this is exactly why I dedicate so much of my time (and an etire module or two) on the process of recognizing the mindsets we all carry with us.

It is the one thing that created the biggest change for me in my own business. All the things you need to do to build a successful business are completely terrifying (in my opinion – coming from someone who is a self proclaimed perfectionist and someone who needs to research everything to death before I can even start.)

If you have ever taken a business building program or attempted to start a business on your own, you know you are required to do things that make you feel uncomfortable, take risks and do things like selling that you may not have done before.

Anyone who chooses to be in a service based business or do work as a coach or counsellor knows that we choose this work to HELP others, not considering the business aspect of what is required to actually get clients into your practice. You actually have to be visible to SELL. Yikes.

So, you can see what I’m getting at here –  none of those business programs will work for you if you don’t do the mindset work first. You need to develop your programming like a muscle or a skill set. You work on it all the time each time you reach a new level in your business.

That’s why understanding what your current beliefs are is so important . You will also learn what tools to have in your toolbox when you start to feel like you are hitting that glass ceiling or you are hitting a plateau you cant bust through.
For example, If you think making money is hard – it will be! If you think you can’t make money as a coach – you won’t. Without getting too woo woo here (i really want to give you realistic tools and advice) but your thoughts will create your environment. So, if you truly believe you wont make any money, then you won’t. To change your reality, you need to change your thoughts. 

The truth is, you aren’t making money if you aren’t spending your time effectively and efficiently. There is a method that 100% works when you are trying to generate income and you are probably doing everything but. The reason we aren’t doing it? is that it is scary to take action and work outside your comfort zone. Especially as coaches, mentors and teachers, and healers – again we want to help people, not be selling all day long or marketing, or doing split tests on our sales page – the business stuff may not be something that comes naturally to us.

But, in order to get your services out there or to embark on the mission you feel called to do – your dharma, your purpose, whatever it is you want to call it – it’s necessary to just start. Know that you can’t control the outcome and it can’t always be perfect. Know that you will fail and you won’t ever feel qualified enough.

I love his quote by Tony Robbins – he says “If you want to achieve success, all you need to do is model those who have already succeeded”

Instead of trying to create your success all on your own in a perfect way, you can model your business after those top people in your industry who are doing it well. They have already spent years trying to figure it out – they have done the testing, and paid the money making mistakes. Learn form them and you can get right to the work of helping people – because I know that’s what you actually want to be doing.

So you can see how you can begin to replace your old scripts and your old beliefs with new ones. If your current beliefs aren’t working for you – change them!

My advice would be to find a coach or mentor who you truly resonate with – because you will be more perceptive learning in their style of teaching. Find someone who has done what you want to do and learn all you can about their process.

To further get this point across I’ll share this story I came across about Pablo Picasso:

Some guy told Picasso he’d pay him to draw a picture on a napkin.

Picasso whipped out a pen and banged out a sketch, handed it to the guy, and said, “One million dollars, please.”

“A million dollars?” the guy exclaimed. “That only took you thirty seconds!”

“Yes,” said Picasso. “But it took me fifty years to learn how to draw that in thirty seconds.”

So my question to you is: Why reinvent the wheel, when you can learn from experts or people who have already figured out the process that works best?

Save yourself some time. I was so intent on doing everything myself, that I ended up getting nowhere fast. I was shooting in the dark and trying to piece everything together using trial and error as my best go-to method. I don’t suggest this!

Starting (or growing) an online business

Starting (or growing) an online business

To begin 2016 off on the right foot, I’ve decided I’m going to write a series of 10 newsletter/ blog posts about growing an online business! Why? Because last year my clients and readers indicated that their main focus for this year is starting (or growing) a profitable online business. And I aim to please!

So, we’ll cover things like how to come up with a good idea, how to sell things online, how to stay organized, how to launch your products and services out into the world, and how to find the clients you want to work with… and lots of other cool stuff!

I know how it feels to be just starting out in your business building process, and let me tell you it can be overwhelming to say the least! It seems like there are so many places to concentrate your attention. Where do you start? What should you do first?

If you’re anything like me, you’re probably working on 10 projects all at once. Maybe you are multitasking and feeling pulled in a few different directions. And then you end up feeling like you never can accomplish anything… nothing gets completed. You come to the end of a week, month, (or worse) the year, and still are no further ahead.  And you feel kind’s like this…

My remedy for this: Set your intentions at the beginning of the year. Make a plan. Create a framework or calendar including your specific goals. And since it’s January, what better time than now to begin mapping out what the year will look like for you and your business. What do you hope to accomplish this year?

Seriously. Take out a piece of paper and write down your intentions for the year. Maybe your list will look like this:

1. Create my first “x” program and enroll 50 (or any number that feel right to you)  ideal clients – before June
2. Make six-figures (or another financial goal) on this launch ^
3. Travel to …. when and how often?
4. Hire a team member or a virtual assistant to help with business building
5. Hire a housekeeper, or someone to do your laundry, or someone to pick up your groceries or babysit your kids… or whatever you need help with.
6. Include weekly trips to the spa or for a massage or to yoga class – the idea is to schedule self-care
7. Join a mastermind group or hire a coach
8. Write weekly blogs, or newsletters – create a social media calendar and schedule these things so they actually happen
9. Grow your email list by 1000 or 2500 or whatever your goal may be. Just be sure create a goal.

At first I really got resistant about scheduling anything – after all, I’m a creative type who works best without rules or limitations of any kind! Seriously, I hate conformity and schedules in general. But in all transparency, It wasn’t until I got REAL about my daily routine and how I was using my time that my business really started to flourish. I wasn’t being efficient at all and I was sabotaging my own efforts by playing small. The truth is, if you don’t plan anything, nothing will happen.

My advice would be to focus your attention on one big project for the year to begin with. And then map out all the steps needed to achieve the goal using 90 day increments as your horizon line. Actually get out your calendar and break up the tasks into smaller parts and work on each until completion rather than trying to work on many things at once. If you are anything like me, this is way harder than it sounds!

For example, if your outcome goal is to make 150,000 revenue in 6 months, you’ll need to decide how much you will need to sell to make your target and what steps are involved. Maybe your services (or group program) cost 2,500 for 6 months and you also sell one-on-one coaching for 4,300. You need to decide how many of each you need to sell. Then list all the actions you will need to put in place to achieve these numbers.

If you are launching a program, you’ll need to create a launch calendar and decide what activities you’ll have to do to promote your services or product.

Maybe you’ll need to grow your list by using facebook advertising, or you need to grow your list organically by posting more frequently in the groups you are a part of, or maybe you could do more guest posting to position yourself as an expert in your field. Whatever the actions are, you need to schedule them in your calendar.

Your action plan could look like this:

1) Monday, Wednesday, and Friday – Facebook ads
Mondays – you launch new ads
Wednesdays and Fridays  – you review the results
2) Every Monday – Guest posting – you email 3 blogs asking them if you could guest post or ask them
to guest post for you.
3) Every Friday you offer a free webinar where you give valuable information and then provide
information about your services – offer a link to your sales page
4) Create a posting schedule for your facebook page and everyday you can have a different theme:
Monday- Humor – cartoon or quote
Tuesday- Interaction – Ask a question
Wednesday- Current news in your industry
Thursday- Giving back – feature your clients or share a giveaway
Friday- Education – tell people about your services or products

WHY are you wanting to achieve this particular revenue goal? Maybe it’s so you have more freedom in your life and more time to spend with your family. Or maybe you are hoping to move into a new house, or quit your 9-5 day JOB, or maybe you just want to prove to yourself that you can do this business thing you have been dreaming about for far too long and you are sick of not stepping up to the plate and actually making it a career instead of an expensive hobby?

Make 2016 the year you finally put yourself in the game!
